What is Tartan Quality Mark Scottish Salmon?

On the 8th June 1995 Ward's Fish became the first fish retailer on Merseyside to be recognised as an official retailer of Tartan Quality Mark Scottish Salmon and Smoked Salmon, a prestigous acknowledgement in the fish retail industry. The scheme was set up by The Scottish Salmon Board, now Scottish Quality Salmon to give the consumer a guarantee that the quality of Salmon and Smoked Salmon purchased from an official retailer is not compromised.
the Tartan Quality Mark

As an official retailer, we are proud to sell salmon carrying the prestigious Tartan Quality Mark.

It guarantees that the salmon is:- ·

  • Genuinely Scottish
  • Reared to meet the stringent standards of the Scottish Salmon QualityAssurance scheme
  • Fully traceable to source
  • Raised with the utmost respect for its welfare and the surrounding environment
  • Independently inspected at all stages

Tartan Quality Mark Salmon can easily be recognised by an octagonal tag that appears on the gills of a salmon. Only salmon carrying this gill tag are guaranteed to meet the five points listed above.

We now source our TQM Scottish Salmon from » Loch Duart . The fish are kept in significantly lower densities than current industry standards, no growth promoters or anti-biotics are used. They are monitored by the RSPCA and comply with the new RSPCA 'Freedom Food' Scheme.

Scottish smoked or smoked Scottish?

This is an important point relating to smoked salmon. At first glance they both appear the same but be warned - there is a fundamental difference!

Scottish Smoked Salmon - The salmon is only smoked in Scotland and is not necessarily Scottish in origin!

Smoked Scottish Salmon - The salmon is Scottish in origin!

Imported Salmon may not meet the standards laid out by Scottish Quality Salmon and could said to be inferior to Tartan Quality Mark Salmon. Always check the wording on packaging carefully!

We offer our Smoked Scottish Salmon from » Loch Fyne Smoke House . They source their Salmon from » Loch Duart and their packets also carry the RSPCA 'Freedom Food' label. Their is very little price difference between our Loch Fyne Smoked Salmon and others available. If you really want to try the difference , taste the Fynest.

Therefore you can shop at Ward's Fish for your salmon with the confidence that it is first of all genuinely Scottish and of the highest quality. Shop with confidence where you see the Official Retailer symbol and the Tartan Tag on the salmon.
